Re: Universal Overheating

  We have had SNOWBIRD, C-38 Hull#296, for 12 years and have cruised the entire California coast and the Sea of Cortez.  Our primary use now is the San Joaquin Delta.  This application has included a lot of motoring--in warm water and hot weather.
  From day 1 we had overheating problems with the Universal 5424 engine when pushed above 1800-1900 RPM.  Rather than listing the numerous failed fixes over the past 10 years, I will get to the one that worked--finally.  Unfortunately I can't credit the contributor to this C-38 list a couple of years ago who suggested this approach:
  1) I replaced the original (2", I believe) heat exchanger with the larger, 3" model.
  2) I moved the water heater from the engine cooling system to the thermostat bypass loop.  To do this, you simply reroute the engine cooling hoses around the water heater, then remove the thermostat bypass hose (the short one molded at 90 degrees), and plumb the water heater between the two bypass fittings.
  This increases the flow of engine cooling water by removing the restriction of the water heater, and the performance of the water heater is not affected, as it receives hot water as soon as the engine comes up to temp and the thermostat closes.
