Mike,

The Catalina 38 is quite different from the Catalina 380/390/387 series. Most if not all C38's have the flat base stanchion which is bolted through the deck. I crewed for many years on a late model Catalina 30 which had the stanchions mounted into a short molded fiberglass toe rail with 2 bolts through the deck. At times crew members pulled the boat toward the dock with the tops of the stanchions with no damage to the deck.

Hi all,

My wife and I have zeroed in on the Cat 38....380....387 as our upgrade boat. In visiting the Annapolis boat show, I noticed that the stanchion mounting technique for this model is unique.....the base of the stanchion appears to be sunk into the toerail/hull-deck joint. I had a couple of questions about this if anyone is game to answer:

a) how far down do the stanchions go?

b) conceptually I like the design but how effective is this in practice vs conventional flat base plate mounting methods?

c) is there any reinforcement in the toe rail for these? Backing plat for the two screws holding them down?

Thanks much and perhaps I will be joining your organization very soon.
