We have holding plate refrigeration on Legacy that can be used as a freezer.
Our "ice box" has two compartments. I don't know if this is standard or
not. The large compartment has the holding plate in it. We tried using the
large compartment as a freezer and the small compartment as a refrigerator
on our first trip to Hawaii but it didn't work well. We were just using too
much electricity as the air and water warmed up. We ate the frozen stuff
fast and turned the temperature down.

It may work better now (though I don't think I'll try it again). When we
replaced our engine, we found a large section of the aft side of the
refrigerator box had no insulation at all where it was next to the engine
water lift. We've since added about 1.5 inches of foam and the refrigerator
pump runs much less. It looks like they just didn't have room for both the
insulation and the water lift so they left out the insulation.

I have thought about turning the area under the chart table (I have a
microwave there now) into a freezer. Hinckley Yachts have used this space
for freezers in some of their boats. Here in Washington I am kind of an
oddball requiring ice in most of my drinks, but I can't shake my Florida
upbringing and traditions. I have a large freezer located in the shelf
outboard in our built in ice box. This makes enough ice but does run up my
electrical load.

Has anyone retrofitted a freezer on a 38?
