[C38] C38 Losing circulating water

Hi Folks;

I have a persistent circulating water leak in my engine. I lose about 500 ml of antifreeze in about 50 miles of motoring. I have changed out the heat exchanger, the hoses, the radiator cap. Any thoughts on where the leak might be?

  This might help
I got this from very old forums, but there are some part numbers.
Oberdorfer Rotary Seals must seal 07/30/02 10:53AM http://forums.torresen.com/eThreads/view/engines/view_post?id=3916
The first time I changed the impeller on my Oberdorfer I ended up pulling the whole shaft out and after replacing the impeller on the shaft and inserting the shaft back into the pump it started to leak water. (This water will rust the front of your engine as well as the oil pan) Very bad news. The next time I replaced the rotary seals as well as the impeller and this did stop the water leak. The shaft seems to be shaped like a Coke bottle that necks down to a considerably smaller diameter at both the water seal and the oil seal center point. This necking looks like an intentional design feature. Anyway, my engine needed a higher capacity pump and it is now using a Sherwood water pump no. 302648 - 42175 that has twice the water flow capacity. The pump came as a kit #302837 for retrofiting Universal models 5411, 5416, 5424, 5432, and 5444

Sherwood has twice the flow of Oberdorfer

I replaced my Oberdorfer last week with a Sherwood, so far it is great. I love getting more water through and I no longer get steam. see http://sankaty.homestead.com/Universal_5432_rawwater_pump_cap.html A KIT IS AVAILABLE TO MOUNT THE CURRENT PUMP ON the universal 5411, 5415, 5424,5432, & 5444 IN PLACE OF THE OBERDORFER. KIT PART #302837. THE KIT CONTAINS THE NEW PUMP AND MOUNTING HARDWARE some folks have also changed to the 3 inch heat exchanger in place of the original 2 inch unit.

DEPCO PUMP COMPANY 1 800 445 1656 I have read with interest the posts re: gpm and cost and compare Oberdorfer with Sherwood.. the Universal/Kubota uses two types of pumps 2 bolt and four bolt, but in reality they are the same pump they are 202 pumps and the flow rate is 9.59 gal per minute at 2500 rpm... cost is $140.00 from Depco, I use them for all pump needs, rebuild kit is $32.31 and comes with all needed for complete rebuild. If you want to replace the shaft it is $21.57. Sherwood no longer makes the M-5 or the H-80 that would be the Sherwood model to replace the 202 style, However a Westebeke kit deal from Sherwood thru Westerbeke or Westerbeke distributor is G903 for 234.20..HOWEVER THE FLOW RATE IS DAMN NEAR THE SAME AS THE OBERDORFER... no brainer 140.00 versus 234.20.... Just ordered a new oberdorfer as a backup for existing pump, also ordered a rebuild kit for ON HAND!!!! happy sailing and Pelago is getting ready for cruise #8

There are two water pumps on the 5424 one is the saltwater cooling pump and
the other the fresh water circulation pump. I have replaced both on my cat
38 I think it is the saltwater pump that Charles has leaking, it has a long
name I have forgotten( sounds Italian I think) If that is the pump it should
be replaced with a Sherwood which is adapted to fit by the dealer. it pumps
more gallons per minute and cools the engine better. If the Great Lakes guy
doesn't have what you want you can also try Hansen Marine in Marblehead Ma
781=631-3282. There is a freeze plug on the bottom of the face of the engine
where this pumps drip will run , if it goes on long enough, the freeze plug
will corode and fail and you will loose the engine oil, again it happened to
me in saltwater. Hope all ends well
