[C38] cockpit drains (alden)

I cut out the floor in the port cockpit locker. Once that was done, I could
get underneath the cockpit floor and do all my repairs. Removing the water
heater makes it much easier to get under there, and it's easy; only 4 lag
screws hold it in.

Russ is the floor you removed under the rear helm seat in that locker? Mine
is wood drop in's came that way from the factory I think. Or is it somewhere
else? I was on a 38 that had part of the cockpit floor replaced with an
access hatch. I am think about doing that.

Fortunately I took all kinds of pictures. Unfortunately they are all 4x6

post them, along with my "replace the rotten wood underneath the cockpit
floor" project pictures. Did you know, acetone is great at removing epoxy
from your hair!

You need to do the "remove the sail locker floor" modification first. I did
it a few years ago; it's easy but scary.

How the heck does one even get close to the scupper hoses? >From the port
side lazarette seat engine access I have a water heater that will have to be
removed and then I still don't think I can get my upper body through the
hole to reach the hose clamps on the drains. I am 5'11" and 175 pounds. Has
anyone ever got to those hoses?

Hi guys,

Probably the balls on the scoupper just are worn out. You will have to take
of the cap and order the replacement balls from perko. They are on their
catalog, but haven't seem them as an stock item anywhere, They do seal
better that ping pong balls. I sent the replacement balls link to the list a
couple of years ago. I should be on the list archives for sure...

Hope this helps,

If I remember right you can route your drains to the opposite side of the
boat to solve the problem but I believe that if that is done then our boats
dont meet some offshore requirement for the time it takes to drain the
cockpit.

So I have a question for the list.
1. how do you keep water from coming in from the cockpit drains?
My drains are strait down and it seems 6 kts or above water seems to
rush in, I use wood plugs to stop this because we are always at 7kts. I
am tired of putting in wooden through hole plugs in is there valves
people put in or is my boat just to ass heavy or is this just a common
problem with the c-38? Does any one have a fix?
