Standing Rigging
Just my thoughts on standing rigging: I did replace mine when I bought
the boat 3 years ago because it was damaged when they removed the mast
and during the shipping process(they were crimped in several places). I
have been in the aviation industry all of my life as a mechanic, pilot
and now I buy and sell airplanes. I say that because airplanes use the
same cables and also have more strain and move and go around pullys.
What is interesting to me is why people want to change there standing
rigging if they don't have corrosion or broken strands. In airplanes
they wont change the cables until there are several broken strands per
the standered per each airplane maintenance manual. The weakest part of
our standing rigging is the swedeges and turn buckles not the cables. I
was going to go bigger when I replaced them but did not after talking to
the yard and Catalina on stress loads and that the turn buckles will
break before the stress load on the cables would. My biggest concern
would be how they swedge the ends onto the cables. I would want a roller
swedger vs a crimper. Now having said that I believe my total cost for
new standing rigging was $2200.00 US.

I am looking into redoing my standing rigging on Sundancer
this spring. The rigging is the same since she was built in1983. I want
to go larger on the on the wires or go with rod rigging. Has anyone
replaced their rigging recently with rod rigging or heavier wires? If so
did you have to beef up your hull and mast attachments?

           Regards,
                Ken

Hi Ken,
I replaced my standing rigging by myself a couple of years a go with
sta-lock swageless fittings. I bought everything from
www.riggingonly.com.
Great prices!!
They advised me to stay with the original wire diameter. A chain will be
as
strong as the weakest link, and the toggles, which usually fail first
will
remain with the same pin diameter unless I redrilled or replaced
chainplates, so, I stood with the same wire diameter (5/16"). I also
changed from 304 to 316 stainless steel, 5% less stronger but has more
corrosion resistance. I just had 42knts a couple of months ago on a
race,
had a chinese gybe, and everything is still ok. Chainplates are another
story. Just took apart the one on the starboard forward shorud, and was
very
corroded with a lot of cracks. I have to replace that one and check the
others........
The wire lenghts are on the C38 org webpage.
Hope this helps,

Steve,
I think what you're referring to is a Baja fuel filter. I don't have
one, but you can Google to learn more.
