[C38] Standing Rigging (Alden Andre)

Alden,When I used Estancia for the first time, the headstay and swage eye
fitting developed a crack all over its lenght, as well as its masthead
toggle, so I replaced only the headstay and its toggle. Then the rest of the
toggles begun to develop cracks and I replaced them one at a time, then
noticed a broken strand on one of the upper shrouds, and that was it. I
replaced the whole thing, except for the turnbuckles, which are next on my
list.

What really sacared me was when I had the old wires on my hand and tried to
make a loop with them, all the strands started to break all over the wires.
There were a lot of very small cracks that are very hard to see, even with a
magnifying glass. This is why I recommend that at the smallest sign of
stress or cracks on a wire, all of them should be replaced. Of course my
boat is in tropical weather with a lot of humidity, and the wires will
corrode faster.
My total cost was around $1700, but is way cheaper than a new mast!!!! Sta
lock or Norseman fittings work great, and the best thing is that If I have
to replace the wires again, the cost will be around $550 because I will
reuse these fittings.
Just my tought!!!

Regards,
Max
