[C38] Shift Cable (alden Andre)

I broke my shift cable last summer because it was connected to the wrong
side of the transmission lever and set at a angle . causing chafe and
eventually breaking. I went to west marine with the removed cable and
found one that matched up. Couldn't tell you the part number though I
just opened a bunch of boxes and found one that was the same.Good thing
I practice sailing into my slip because I had to do it for real that
day.

Does anyone know if or where I can order a new shift linkage cable? Is
this a standard length cable or will I need to pull it out and take it
to ??? to have another one made. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Craig,

I don't know the specs on our cables but a few years back I had to
replace the cables on a stinkpot and West Marine was very helpful. My
cable wasn't standard but they had a catalog of standard sizes and a
source for having custom cables made.

The fit was perfect and the price reasonable. If you have a West Marine
in your area, check with their customer service desk.

These are standard Morse control cables. I would contact
Catalina and see what info they have. Joe launie, Macavity

Most of the small inverters are of the psuedo sine sort. Switching
regulators (like the really small wall-warts) won't work with them at
all. It has to do with the effect of having two on and off switches in
series and the inductor/capacitor of the switching regulator not having
sufficient intermittant duty cycle to handle the long zero voltage time,
so the voltage never really rises to the correct charge point.

Les H

Hello Rod and Patti,

I'm behind on my email and don't know what answers you have received.

The hull should be level, not the bottom of the keel. If the bow is
low,
your cockpit won't drain. When we haul, we put one piece of railroad
tie
cut into a 24" log under the middle of the keel so the boat can rock on
the
log without straining the hull where the keel mounts.

Many 38's end up with the "Catalina smile" where the keel meets the
bilge
from strain when blocked. By using a rather small contact area of the
cross tie log, the keel can rock fore and aft while still supporting
enormous weight.

I was at the Seattle Boat show this past weekend looking at radar
units for the boat. There is alot to choose from and my biggest question
is where to mount the radar screen. If anyone has radar on their boat
where did you mount the screen for best use? Also any input on what
brands will help. A fellow down at the marina told me today that one
company makes a remote screen you can keep in the cockpit. It plugs into
the back of the unit and a cable can be run out on deck with a readout.
Does anyone have knowledge of this brand of radar?

Ken,
I have my radar screen mounted on my pedestal. I have it placed in a

Edson mount. My GPS is also mounted on the pedestal. I plan to sail this

saturday so will send pix. One thing I learned about the installation.
Edson tells you you can run the co-ax inside the pedestal guard tubing.
They do not tell you it will take two strong men over three hours to
horse it through. It is the mother of all tight fits. Edson is now
making a pedestal guard with larger diameter tubing. I think you could
easily buy that tubing and install it with the labor savings from the
other installation. You do not want to be running below in the fog to
look at your radar screen and you do not want to send someone below to
look at the screen to tell you what is out there. This is bad enough on
a racing boat. On a cruising boat - it could severely test your
relationship with the partner sent below. Every trip, race or cruise
from Santa Barbara to or around the islands goes through the steamer
lanes at least twice. They are fast and if downwind, silent. Crossing
the steamer lanes in the fog can be scary. One foggy afternoon, ghosting

along at 2 knots outside the steamer lanes I suddenly heard a massive
fog horn close by. (long before I had radar) I rang my bell, blew my
horn and banged on a pan to let them know we were there. The horn got
closer and then slowly faded away. I never could hear the engines or bow

wave. The next weekend, sailing in the same area, I realized I was
trying to avoid being run down by an oil platform. Joe Launie/Macavity
