[C38] Peroxide (very interesting)

Larry and all,

Peroxides are not 'safe' and the email below would get you into a LOT of
problems. Peroxides as a class of chemicals are highly oxidative,
meaning they tend to 'burn' things. While 3% hydrogen peroxide isn't
going to kill you, or probably make you sick by drinking a mouthful, it
is VERY damaging over time.

Using it for 10 minutes per day on your teeth will strip the enamel from
them. Using it briefly every few days is probably not a problem provided
you are using fluoride toothpaste and seeing a dentist often (the
dentist will notice if you are loosing enamel and warn you)

Letting your toothbrush soak in any peroxide is probably a bad idea.
Peroxides are not terribly long lasting. They react violently and
quickly with organic materials and degrade in the presence of oxygen
and/or sunlight (thus the brown, sealed bottle). Once your toothbrush,
light and air are done degrading that hyrdogen peroxide in the cup, you
are simply left with an organic rich solution, unrefrigerated which is a
delight for many bacteria. Wanna kill those bacteria and such on your
toothbrush? Let it dry. The bacteria you are worried about on your
toothbrush can't survive without water for more than a few hours.

Counters can be cleaned with peroxide, this is probably not a problem.
However, it's a lot more expensive and isn't necessary (nor is bleach
for that matter) It, like bleach will also eventually fade your
countertops pattern (and will eat away at any wood counters)

Pouring peroxides on a cutting board will kill bacteria, yes, and
degrade your wood. . .and bleach it. . . If you like dried up,
dessicated cutting boards, go for it. Otherwise, simply clean your
cutting boards well, make sure you keep them oiled and waxed (with
mineral oil and/or beeswax) and smooth. If they need a light sanding,
don't be afraid. Just make sure you oil/wax after. Don't forget to dry
them. THAT's what will do the best in killing the bacteria. Does it
really hurt to hit them with peroxide ever once in a while? no. But is
it necessary? no.

Fungus on your toes.. . Go see a doctor, it's probably more complicated
and the peroxide isn't a perm cure. . sheesh

I call Shenanigans on the gangrene.. .ANYONE who has gangrene better get
themselves to a hospital ASAP.

**The thing about your nose and a cold is probably not a good idea. The
stuff you're feeling bubble in your nose has nothing to do with the
cold, it's snot. Which is good for you. Your nostrils a VERY sensitive
so putting a peroxide up there is more likely to harm the tissues there
than do you any good. When you're sick, the bacteria or virius is INSIDE
YOU, not in your nose. .

Ok, I'm done now. . The rest of it is crap too. . Who wrote this? The
National Peroxide Council?

Please do not forward this email about peroxides on, it's false
information and potentially dangerous. Not to mention, hydrogen peroxide
is EXPENSIVE for how much it would cost to use on a daily basis. It has
it's uses, yes. It's a very good TOPICAL disinfectant. But it has it's
limits.
