Steve,

Saw you on Saturday while I was delivering my boat (ZAO-Ben
36.7) up to Port Huron for the race. I owner the C-38 now called
'Sleeping Bear' in Presque Isle and formally called Zao and Windy. I
knew your boat when it was new under the first owner (Don Quinlin (won a
Mac) and Father Quinn (We called it the Almighty Quinn) then. Good luck
in your travels.

Charles

I too spent about 30 years there...out of Sandusky. I agree with Bill
about PIB being the most protected anchorage, actually, you'll want a
mooring as the only place to anchor is over by Perry's Monument
(definitely with going up) but I've dragged anchor there on more than
one occasion. The other thing about the Bay is that it's party city,
good if you're into that and loud if you're not. There are also a
couple of wineries and a fairly cool cave tour you can see.

One of our favorite spots was Kelley's Island. True, the beach on the
north is not a good anchorage when the wind is anywhere out of the
north, but its about a mile of sand on a state park and a popular place
to hang out...2 mile walk across the island to Town (bars/stores/etc).
A note about the north side, I did ride out a 60 kt blow in my Mirage
236 once, it was hairy but we did fine with extra scope on the anchor
line. Anyway, if you want to see Kelley's, there are two very nice
marinas on the south side right in Town.

That's about it for the islands, the others are ok to visit if you are
there for a purpose but not much to see...except for the old Lonze
winery on Middle Bass...and there is a marina there as well; approach
from the east and just behind the winery as you come from PIB.

Sandusky is very boater friendly (some statistic like 4000 boats docked
in/around Sandusky Bay), downton is nice, Cedar Point is great if you're
into amusement parks/ resorts. After that would out be Huron or
Vermillion, good places to overnight, waterfront restaraunts, etc. I've
heard Lorain has come into its own relative to boating, but that is
since I've been gone. And again, agreeing with Bill, Edgewater Yacht
Club (just west of the Cleveland skyline) would be a good place to stay
if you want to see Cleveland (lots to see, if you want). I've also done
a little racing out of Mentor (30-40 miles east of Cleveland) and the
Mentor Yacht Club would put you up.

Sorry for the dissertation...but, hope its helpfull.

I have just finished the legs of my cruise through Lake Michigan, the
northern islands of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay (700 nm so far) and am
now in Detroit, Michigan at the Bayview Yacht Club (famous for its
sponsoring of the "Mac" races). Am about to enter Lake Erie (today)
and have been told the Western end is great, but all I can find a lot
about is "Put In Bay." Anyone have some advice regarding favorite or
must see spots? By the way, the winds and weather have been great, with
lots of 8+ plus boat speed (I tend to reef when boat speed on the GPS
gets consistently higher than 8.5 as weather helm builds at those
speeds). One fun fact is that I hit12.5 while motoring as I entered
the St. Clair River going down to Detroit due to a very strong current!

All hints would be helpful. Especially regarding anchorages that I
should not try due to 6' 9" keel.
