[C38] Catalina 38 Nationals

Hi guys,

We old guys also call this embarassing situation a "May West" for obvious reasons (unless you don't know who she was. try Google and print out a few photos of her--then you'll get it)

I was aboard a Pearson Commander several years ago. We were racing away from the Galveston ship channel when the spinnaker wrapped and formed a May West. No matter what we tried (10-15 knots wind) the wrap would not come out. We abandoned the race and did a 180 for Galveston harbor but the aux diesel was not powerful enough to overcome the drag of the tangled chute. The skipper had to call for Coast Guard assistance. Once back at the dock in relative calm the sail unfurled easy as pie. What a tangled web we weave indeed! Its amazing how little wind pressure seems to weld the nylon to the forestay.

    Larry,
Not only have we furled a spinnaker - we got an hourglass in a genoa. My past crews could do just about anything - and did. Joe Launie/Macavity

Trans Pac Race, well what can I say? We came in 4th in our class out of 6 boats. Not too good but not too bad either, we FINISHED! I have drafted a story about the race if any of you would like to read it let me know and I’ll e mail it to you. The new, more elliptical, rudder worked fine, I do believe there was better handling downwind with it. I’ll try to get the article into the Mainsheet on the next publication and hopefully some photos too. Have you ever furled a spinnaker? LOL We did.
