[C38] cockpit drains (alden)

JACE has an access hatch installed by a previous owner. I use it, but
mostly for light. The depth from the cockpit sole to anything needing
attention is beyond the reach of myself or my wife. I have used it to
adjust the packing gland, but you need really long wrenches to do that.
I think the mod of the port lazerette that various folks on here have
done is probably a better solution. You also have the issue of
gasketing on a floor hatch in the cockpit.

The hatch was plastic when I took possession of the boat. It cracked
just from my weight (250lbs). The rim appeared OK, so I replaced the
hatch with one cut from 3/8" marine ply, with another piece that fits
down through the opening epoxied to the bottom of it. I used a
stainless hinge and cut it to fit the pins on the plastic rim piece.
Then I created a compression latch using one of those turn and lock
fittings from Perkin, and created a wedge to go on the bottom edge of
the deck just outside the hatch opening. You now have to put weight on
the hatch to close and latch it, but I haven't seen any leakage.

The plastic rim seems to be holding up well, but I would feel better if
it were of metal, I think.

Actually our cockpit sole is too narrow and too short. I cannot quite
lay down (the wheel pedestal is the blocking factor), and I am a bit
broad in the shoulders, so I can only get one arm at a time down into
the engine area without straining something, or scratching the heck out
of my upper arms. So mostly it is an observation port.

Les H
