[C38] Varnish

We use Sikkens Cetol, or the same product repackaged in the West Marine brand, on our wood. I know there are newer products out there but after trying several remedies in the early 90's, we stumbled on Cetol and have been very happy with it ever since.

Our boat is kept in Tampa Bay Florida which is very harsh on any wood product or anything else. We overcoat about every year or two after a very light sanding to dull the surface and it then looks new every time. People overcoat without the sanding but I think you get a better bond and smoother finish with the very light sanding.

You have to be very careful about drips and oversplash because Cetol creeps around masking tape if you are not very careful but other that, it's extremely easy to work with. We also painted the bulkhead in the head with Cetol and made it look new. Now we can shower without leaving any water or soap stains on the wood.

I thinkCetol comes in gloss or semigloss. We use the original formula whichever one that is. I keep a quart on board but I don't remember what the label says.

I need to re do a lot of wood on Hassle, the 5k plus trip took a lot out of her and the wood trim. What are the suggestions for varnish, a friend recommended Crystal.
