[C38] Listserve Digest, Trans Pac and engine hard to start, steering (alden)

On the engine
1. Engine Start-check all fuel systems starting at the fuel tank and the
on and off valve at the fuel tank. Mine this year was half closed,
burned up a fuel pump(my fault moved it when installing new refrigerator
pump and lines. . before this the engine was getting harder and harder
to start. Then the rest of the suggestions are fine. You need fuel air
and compression for a deisel motor to run. Also in Portland the
preheater glow plug has to work for the first start of the day.

2. Trans Pac- Steve since you are doing all these secrete mods are you
willing for a northwest 38 member to come up and take a gander at the
projects? I think we need to have a northwest 38 contingent gathering at
the Seattle boat show this year. I was at the local boat yard (schooner
creek ) and Roy Disney's boat is there getting 23 more feet added to it
for its new owner. I was checking out some other modifications they were
doing also that could help your boat beat the southern CA surfer dudes
boat. Also since one of my companies has aerodynamic engineers(we
specialize in making airplanes go faster and more efficient) we would be
happy to help you out any way we can so the northwest will hold the
Fastest to the island title. If you won maybe we could get the Catalina
38 nationals moved to Seattle. I wonder if the Southern CA guys would be
willing to put that on the table as a bet??????? Probably not they would
all have to buy wet weather gear, and the rain would mess up their 300
dollar haircuts. Also they wouldn't know what to do in wind higher than
15 kts. I think 25-40 kts would freak them out. Just some thoughts.

3. Steering- I think I read some one was interested in a steering column
stiffing mod. Well I did one if you would like some pics just email or
call me.

Larry,
You can never match the transpac with the Islander 37 which Sid
Blender later bought and became the first Super Star. The story is very
long but the high points are this pack of clowns decided to transpac
without having a clue. They were yacht brokers from Marina del Rey. I
talked them out of taking the cleats off so they could handhold the
sails. Anyway, halfway across they sent out an SOS because the hull/deck

joint was leaking so badly they thought they were going to sink. A US
Navy nuclear sub was nearest and they towed them halfway of the
remaining distance to Hawaii when a commecial tug took over. Joe

Paul, Thomas Friedman published an article yesterday that reflects my
thoughts on Climate Change extremely well. I have extracted two
paragraphs from it. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Bill

I Believe I Can Fly

Reading the headlines these days, I can't help but repeat this truism:
If you jump off the top of an 80-story building, for 79 floors you can
think you're flying. It's the sudden stop at the end that tells you
you're not. It's striking to me how many leaders and nations are
behaving today as though they think they can fly - and ignoring that
sudden stop at the end that's sure to come.

Closer to home, America's climate-deniers mounted an effective
disinformation campaign that made "climate change" a four-letter word in
the Republican Party. This undermined efforts to get a clean energy bill
- the sort that might break our addiction to oil and take money away
from the people our soldiers are fighting in the Middle East. And all of
this happened in 2010, which is on track to be the Earth's hottest year
on record. So here's the math: 98 climate scientists out of 100 will
tell you that man's continued carbon emissions pose the risk of
disruptive climate change this century. Two out of 100 will tell you it
doesn't. And "conservatives" today tell you to bet on the two. If the
climate-deniers are right - but we combat climate change anyway - we'll
have slightly higher energy prices but cleaner air, more renewable
energy, a stronger dollar, more innovative industries and enemies with
less money. If the deniers are wrong and we do nothing, your kids will
meet the su
 dden stop at the end.

I had mine replaced on Tortola about 5 years ago to the tune of about $
3000.00, there is a nineteen % import tax in the BVI.

Joe: the $3000.00 did not include the turnbuckles, just the wire and
swedges.
