[C38] PHRF rating versus actual displacement?

Glen, Part of the displacement increase maybe due to gel coat that was used
on almost all fiberglass boats of that time period. My hull was built the
last part of '84 with a polyester gel coat system that included a fire
retardant. This system proved to greatly enhance the growth of blisters. I
like to race and at haul out every 2-3 years I couldn't sand the old paint
without breaking through the blisters. Every broken blister had to be
recoated with epoxy- I had hundreds and hundreds of them. After going
through a couple of haul outs repairing blisters, I had the bottom pealed
(removing all gel coat below the water line- about 1/8th of a inch), and
replaced with a vinylester gel coat system. Vinyslester system is used on
all modern fiberglass hulls. The result was no more blisters and the boat
floats a good inch higher- not measured though, just visual. I also believe
the boat is dryer on the inside. The bottom line on all this is I believe
our hulls can soak up a lot of water/weight, which could explain some of the
weight deferential between PHRF and actual.
Cheers, Steve Orton (hull #304)

Subject: [C38] PHRF rating versus actual displacement?

Has any one compared their actual displacement figures with the factory
specs?

I own hull number 13, POIA, here in New England. Have owned her for
almost 12 years.

I have the feeling she is "overweight" and like many boat mfgs I work
with this is not unusual to have a displacement spec that was a target
but not achieved. This particularly happens with the first few boats
built; they are over built which is a good thing.

However, I am going to have POIA measured this spring since if the
displacement is in fact much higher than the specs then her PHRF rating
is lower than it should be. I would be curious if other members have
any such experiences?

thanks
Glenn Walters
