[C38] 1/4 inch bolts holding the track?

Chuck,

I hope that I didn't steer you wrong about the Teflon strips for the
companion way hatch slides. A friend tried them and said that they didn't
stay attached to the deck.

I would like to relate the approach I took summer 2008. I drilled the teak
plugs on the wood trim and removed the storm hood that the hatch slides into
after removing the traveler. The flanges on the companionway hatch that
slide in the slots on the deck were worn down due to sand and grit in the
slots so I built them up using glass cloth and epoxy. Then I glued some
thin stainless strips to the slots in the deck with epoxy thinking that this
would make a smooth durable surface for the hatch to slide on. Then when I
replaced the storm hood I found that the companionway hatch didn't slid
easily and I had to shim the storm hood up to get the hatch to slide freer.
This worked reasonable well until the metal strips separated from the deck
slots. I hate drilling holes in the boat but I think that I need to take it
all off again and screw the stainless slides down. Yes, I had already
plugged the holes and varnished the teak trim strips.

Hopefully there is some wisdom to be gleaned from this.

Wow!
That seems a bit small? I think mine are at least 5/16.... I put a
stainless backing plate in on the cabin side when I re-installed them last
time. I also discovered some voids on the starboard side cabin roof that
needed tending to. Only problem with the backing plate is it interferes
with the cabin light fixture, but I feel more confident when I brace both
feet and haul on the mainsheet....

And I am with Les on getting to things while the big stuff is open! When I
took my blocks off two years ago, I was able for the first time to get all
the extra varnish off the cabin top in those nooks and crannies you just
cannot get to!

I plan on taking the whole cabin hatch off this Spring to install the Teflon
track that Phil set us on to. I will fill all the screw holes that hold the
teak on with epoxy and re-drill as they are really getting loose. Same goes
for the tabs for the dodger. I took this off a couple of years back and was
amazed at the dirt and mold under the teak....

Max,
Can you send your boat yard guy up my way? I have a bit of waxing coming
up!

All the best,
