[C38] Stern Rail

Tom,

Thanks, I was on the phone today with a local company Phil Gay suggested and after two more races will work on taking off the stern rail to have it welded up. The weld on the port forward stanchion broke from hanging on it during the race while steering. We are also going to take off the bow rail to have it straightened, an unseemly bend in it that came with the boat.

I know we have talked about radar mounting in the past, Mine is gimballed on the mast and I would not suggest it to anyone. When we tack a big sail it grabs the gimball rotates the radome 90 degrees and bends it so that when it comes back to level it is pointing down rather than level. This is the second time it has happened. Im considering a post off the stern and would love suggestions and opinions from the list.

Thanks

Steve

Steve,

Unless you had a major collision at sea totally destroying your stainless stern rail, why don't you just have your stern rail repaired? Stainless is fairly easy to work with if someone has the correct equipment.

I welded supports to my stern pulpit to strengthen the forward part where the pelican hook connects. I mounted my new bimini on that strengthened overhang instead of mounting it on the gunnels where the original bimini had been mounted.

I did the welding modifications with the stern pulpit still on board without even removing it which made for a very easy and fast modification.

Unless your stern rail is badly destroyed, any good welder with a TIG or MIG welder should be able to repair the damage.

Probably Garhaurer, they used to make the stanchions, toe rail etc.
