[C38] Main Haylard Rope Clutch Question

Steve,

We had a double on Port and single on Starboard in the same location as you have yours. I am removing the Port side as I have the cunningham, main, vang and traveller to that side and the clutch only gets in the way. On the Starboard side Im going to play with moving it inside the traveller closer to the winch, starboard is traveller, topping lift and foreguy, If I can move it inside the dodger that will make it easier when we have the dodger up, but Im thinking it will need to go right where the dodger attaches to the deck. the question will be if it is still far enough away from the winch so that when we do a dip pole jibe that the line wont tangle up as we release the clutch.

Hi Steve,

Please find the attached photos of what I believe was the stock rope clutch assembly for c. 1985 C-38's. They are mounted forward of the stock traveler. There is a double clutch assembly on the port side. One for the main halyard (missing after parting last weekend!) and one for the primary jib halyard. The one on starboard holds the secondary jib halyard and spin halyard on our boat. So far they work well but are forward of the traveler and a little bit of a reach but not bad. Unless you are going to replace the traveler I think this is a good solution but I might recommend going for a 3 or even 4 position clutch to allow for a foreguy, topping lift, a second spinnaker halyard, etc. They really help when you are short crewed and have a limited number of winches on the cabin top.

Hi Guys,

I just have the winch and a cleat for the halyard (1980), but have wanted more...could someone send a picture of the clutch/location?

Hi Jay, the original halyard diameter for the C38 ( according to the check list from Catalina that is now available on the C38 web) is 3/8", so if you have 1/2' and hasn't been any changes on your running rigging hardware, you shouldn't be having any problems by using a smaller diameter line. Another story is the rope clutches... What are you using? Garhauer was the original clutches on a 1984 C38 that I have seen, and one was using 7/16"......

Good Day All,

The outer cover of our main halyard parted last weekend near the rope clutch and given it's age I am going to replace the main halyard. I'd like to replace with a 7/16" Stay Set X halyard as I believe the masthead sheeve will accommodate it, but was wondering about the current rope clutch at the halyard winch. I believe the current halyard is ½" double braid and was wondering if anyone has experience with 7/16" line in that clutch? It will save considerable time and effort if I can do a simple replacement. Thanks!
