Steve,

Another thought, pull the mast diagram off the web site and make sure when they put your rig back up that the spreaders are NOT level but raised 3-4 inches as per the drawing. Our rig went up with the spreaders level and that is another item on the list of to dos this year.

Steve

Hi, It's been 9 years since we've done ours. They are swagged but they are 5/16, does everyone have 3/8 on the rigs? Joint Adventure is in Pago Pago. You may have seen her on Lat 38 laying on her side, anyway we broke the bolt to our intermediate shrouds between Bora Bora and AM Samoa. We have also broken the hydaulic backstay about 18 days out of Mazatlan bound for the Marquesas. We did have a piece of rod rigging made up with the proper fitting to go in place of it, ready to go. We return to her next week, I'd love to bring new rigging with me but I didn't measure anything, and the old measurements are not to be found yet. I hope we can make it to NZ where we can get a good rigging job. Our forestay is only 4 years old. Maybe I should get the tops all swagged and let the bottoms be long and use Stay-Lok or Norseman? I'm opn to suggestions.

Thanks,

Rod

		All,
I have the mast off the boat and getting it painted. Now the rigging. The powers at be recommend the the rigging be replaced every 10 years and my 1985 is 25 years old! In my opinion the 38 is way over rigged compared to other modern rigs, ie the J120. The wire is very tough to look for failure points (cracks), because of the inner wire with in the outer. So I replace all the wire, but how about the rest and where do you stop? The 5/8" shear pins- you can lift the whole boat in single shear. The bronze turnbuckles could be polished and the exterior inspected- a failure would probably originate in the root of the internal threads, which would be very tough to inspect. What I'm asking has any body had a rigging failure on the 38 other than a collision and what failed?? Experience is the best indicator not some arbitrary rule.
Any and all answers are appreciated, Steve O
