I always time the glowplugs it for 30 seconds regardless of the outside
temp.

By the way, Jay, where are you in San Diego. I am at Southwestern YC.

Stop being impatient, and slowly count to at least 20! Let us know if this
helps get you started.

I second Dan’s comment. We still have the original glowplugs and control
panel on Broad Reach #311. If I’m in a hurry and try to start the engine
with only a few seconds of glowplug it takes 8-10 cranks to get it started,
if I wait for 20-30 seconds it starts on the first half crank. It’s a
dramatic difference. The engine has had a complete professional rebuild so
the compression, fuel pump timing, etc. are in fine shape and it runs like a
champ. But the accessories are all original. I think I remember 70’s-80’s
diesel cars being the same way.

Hi all, it's Dan with the Blonde Stranger. I bought the boat last fall in
Rhode Island and when I was recommissioning the boat this past spring I was
also buying on ebay a Garhauer traveler and Garhauer boom vang from the
same Dave Santangelo that is helping to rebuild Hassel. He had some business
to take care of on the Eastcoast and stopped by to see me in Rhode Island.
I had never heard the engine run before I bought the boat but was assured
it did by the sellers mechanic who winterized it. While Dave was here he
gave me a little tip about the glow plugs.

Patrick, if your boat still has the original ampmeter setup in the cockpit
panel as mine does, check to see if there is significant discharge when
you activate the glow plug switch. Mine didn't show discharge while Dave was
here and he thought the glowplugs maybe needed replaced. After fooling with
the switch (turning it on several times over and over) it finally showed
the significant discharge that Dave talked about and I finally got to hear
it run. I have seen some responses talking about a selinoid, I don't know
if that is original or added on, but even in the summer this year my engine
wouldn't start the first time unless I held the glowplug switch for almost
20 seconds. The original literiture on the engine said hold it for 30
seconds.

Hope this helps.

I have a 3 cylinder Universal Diesel and sometimes it will not start. I

Sometimes when I bleed it, it will start. Other times it won't.
Can it get "flooded"?
