Mike,

Peregrine was rated somewhere around 140-146 with cruising spinnaker and a 135% #2 before we upgraded our sails and prop (PHRF NW) now we are a 5555 and rate 126. Here are what the polars say we should be able to do upwind. Backstay adjuster last year made a noticable improvement in our pointing ability, once you get her dialed in upwind the only thing left to do is to stand at the wheel with a really big stupid grin.

True Wind Speed UPWIND VMG True Wind Angle
Boat Speed App Wind Speed App Wind Angle
(kts) (kts) (kts) (deg) (deg)
6 4.81 9.7 25.2 46.3
8 5.57 12.3 25.2 44.0
10 6.03 14.6 25.0 42.0
12 6.20 16.6 24.7 39.7

Hi Mike, I'm Dan from Middle River in the upper bay. I bought a shoal draft C38 in Newport RI and just brought it to the bay last spring. It is a 1981 hull #108 and I am racing non spinnaker on Wednesday nights with Glenmar Sailing Assoc. The boat is pretty basic. It has the original roller furling, only the standard primary winches, no halyards led aft, no winch on the boom for outhaul and no backstay adjuster. I have added a Garhauer solid boom vang and a Garhauer straight traveler. I believe it has the original Hood main in pretty good shape for it's age. It came with a very light mylar jib from another boat and measures out to be a 143%. It also came with a practically new cruising spinnaker. I bought a very nice mylar/kevlar jib from a friends Express 35 that measures out to be 142% and also his spinnaker. I also bought a very nice dacron genoa off of ebay and it measures about 145%.
So far it hasn't been too good to windward although we are getting better. I go for footing instead of pinching. We have tightened up the backstay turnbuckle for a pretty tight backstay but the headstay still has a pretty good amount of sag.
In a good breeze 13-15knots it is very fast off the wind and downwind with twin headsails it is a rocket almost keeping up with the spinnaker boats. We did do one sanction race in the fall and came in 2nd of 14 boats. At the start we didn't look good at all with our pointing. It turned out to be a drifter with winds about 3 knots. The wind shifted on the second leg and it was a pretty broad reach. We sheeted the jib to the boom and really ghosted along pretty good and made up some good time.
PHRF this year is going to give Spinnaker ratings and Non Spinnaker ratings. I think the C38 will rate the same for both ratings. I believe I may also send the measurements of the cruising spinnaker. I think if I choose to carry and use both the spinnaker and the cruising spinnaker I will take a 6 second penalty. I am rated 135 and do not get the roller furling credit.
Also hopefully I can get a backstay adjuster and it will probably make a big difference in pointing. I am also planning to add 1 or 2 full battens. I am a pretty good sailer and expect to sail it to the 135 rating.
Our club cruises the Southern bay and we will be in Solomons this summer and maybe we can meet up.
There is another C38 shoal draft in Annapolis nemed Jazz. I'm not sure how he does but he will probably respond to you as well.

I'm looking at a C 38 shoal draft can anyone tell me how the up wind pointing angles differ from the regular draft is it drastically different? Also any other info on the shoal draft sailing characteristics would be nice. I sail on the Lower Chesapeake Bay and the PHRF rating on a C38 is 120 and the shoal draft is 135 can they sail their rating?
