nipper- When hauling in an anchor line on old ships, the line itself was
not run to the capstan. Instead, nippers were used to grasp the anchor line
and a line to the nipper run to the capstan. I think they were usually used
in pairs. Perhaps they reversed the capstan direction each time a nipper
was reset. This description based on books, I've never seen it done.
