[C38] Polars on the website

Actually with the cost of refills (it being within reaching distance to
be most effective) it may be one of the most expensive instruments ever
created!

Could I use a tumbler filled with Scotch (sailing fluid) and accomplish
the same effect? Maybe one inserted into one of those cup holders that
swivel?? I mean, this would be the cheapest instrument I have ever
bought. LOL

Larry,
We have a tippy meter (inclinometer) mounted on the forward bulkhead
of the cockpit under the door. I crewed on an Ericson 32 in ocean racing
class D of the Overton series. We ran the boat by our instruments which
were a compass and a tippy meter. We changed sail when we had too many
(or too few) tippys. We use it constantly on the 38. The boat sails
best going to weather with 10 to 15 degrees of heel. More than that and
you are dragging your big fat hull thru the water. The one we have is
plastic and cost about $15. Joe

Well Charles, we have never measured our heel nor do we have a device to
do so. So, anyone have some input here? I'm quite sure Steve S is
going to heel well in the Trans Pac though, maybe even knock down, that
is if he gets out of the slip with his new 26 inch prop that our diver
is going to install for him in Rainbow Harbor.

Best regards,

I have just uploaded the promised Polars to the Members area of the
website. It is in the Racing section even though it will help all of us
whether cruising or racing. It is surprising how much this helps course
plotting and best VMG. All the calculations are here including tables
and extra plots so you can develop your own given modifications made.

There is also a good discussion and calculation of Static Stability
which buttresses our discussion a short time ago. While it
mathematically says we can safely heel 61 degrees.... I am not going to
test this! Perhaps that is something our Transpac folks could test and
report on?

Steve, will do while you are in your slip in Rainbow Harbor, just keep
in mind not to put the 26 inch prop on until you are ready to leave your
slip for the start line.

Larry, I don't have any nice pics of my transom if you could be so kind
as to snap a few for me along the course :-)
