[C38] Headstay Length?

Boy, I sure had that wrong- I just checked out the PHRF web site Steve S gave. Now I'm trying to remember where the luff dimension came from when they were measuring my 155.
Sorry about that, Steve O

It is my understanding, the "I" dimension for our boats is 49.8 feet and this is an actual max sail/luff dimension. To be class legal, you can't have a luff longer than that. My #1 racing sail was built to slightly under that maximum. The tack is shackled directly to the bow fitting bypassing the headsail furler. The cruising sail with a shorter luff is only used with the furler.

I got the same measurement as Steve. But, this is only the case if you don't have headsail furling! My favorite 155% headsail was far too long once I had removed my tuffluff and rigged the profurl.

David,

the max luff measurement on my boat was 48'10" measured with a tape attached to the halyard and pulled to the sheave and then pulled tight to the top of my furler, then another 12" from the furler to the forestay attachment pin for a total lenght of 49'10".

Hi, David,
The technical stuff is available after you log in. In the meantime,
you can get the I and J from the brochures.
        Go to the website:
        http://www.catalina38.org/?page_id=75/

About halfway down, the I and J are given as 49.8 and 15.5.

You can also check out the photos of the brochures to double check.

        49.8^2+15.5^2=2720.29

Taking the square root of that gives 52.15 or 52' 1 7/8" as the head
stay length.

I measured mine at 52' 3" when we replaced the gear a few years ago, so
I expect that most of the boats will vary by something similar +/- an
inch or so.

Just remember that nothing is square on a boat and no two boats are
really identical. That is why knowing how to use a tick board will help
you build interior stuff.

Les H

In no particular order:

This website says the "I" measurement is deck to masthead:

http://www.secondwindsails.com/measurement.php

I did I squared + J squared and got 2570.89, which should put the max
hoist for headsail at about 50'. Even if I went up the mast I wouldn't be
able to measure that because I don't have a tape that long!

What's this about paying online? I'll pay, if I know who, where and how much.

Also, in addition to not being able to find the (approximate) headstay
length, I can't find any of those other nifty technical sheets that I used
to be able to find on Catalina38.org. Are they still there? Am I going
blind?

And speaking of hard to navigate websites, we have a new iteration of
sailingmontauk.com up. Comments, critique and links welcome!

Tonight Ill pull my measurement forms from when we ordered new sails and
pass them along,
