Joe, do you have blueprints or diagrams of the bowsprit and pulpit? If so
maybe they could be posted on the website.

Craig,
I added a 5 inch Seldnn and am very happy with it. It was recommended
and sold to me by my friend at Ullman sails. It is very easy to deploy and
retract. We pushed it a bit beyond the recommendations and have it 42 inches
past the
head stay. We have been using it with our regular 3/4 oz. asssymtric and it
gets the sail away from the main so it flies better. It is MUCH easier to
gybe. PHRF flipped out and hit us 15 seconds but we usually sail in our Club
Handicap fleet where your rating is set by your performance. To improve the
boat in really light air, of which we get our share, say 3 to 6 knots, we
have just bought a 1/2 oz chute with minimal shoulders, designed for the
full 19 foot J. We hve not flown it yet so will report on that. I think we
will either be very fast or have very big screw-ups or perhaps both. The
only glitch, whcih I think we have just fixed, is that the 5 inch sprit
would not fit in the foretriangle with the existing bow pulpit. I just had a
new bow pulpit made to solve that problem. While I was at it, I made the new
bow pulpit open like the J-105 or 120. As you know, one thing leads to
another. Joe Laiunie/Macavity

Joeseph. I have been giving a lot of thought to adding a retracting sprit.
What type did you install? And are you happy with it?

Leslie,
Now that you are retiring you can come up to Santa Barbara and sail on
Macavity. While I do not single hand, I am handicapped and have set up the
boat to be easy to sail with electric winches, grab handles on the side of
the bimini (no dodger_) for going on deck and a retracting sprit with
assymetric chutes. Come on up and join us. We are in the boat yard in
Channel Islands harbor at the moment where we re-wired the mast, put on new
standing rigging and lifelines. Joe Launie/Macavity P. S. In the mid 1970s I
crewed on a Yankee 38 owned by John Linsky from Aerospace Corp.

Steve (I think),

This is being sent from my work email (leslie.g.delong at aero.org), which I
use daily. I will be retiring at the end of this month, but there is a
possibility that I will continue with some part-time work for the company
(The Aerospace Corporation, a non-profit think tank that operates an FFRDC,
like Rand, JPL, Mitre, etc.), and they will likely let me keep the internet
account.

My home email is ldelong at socal.rr.com , but I don't check it more than
weekly.

My interest in the C38 stems from a strong appreciation for its
esthetics...a beautiful boat. It was my "someday" dream boat, until I had a
chance to sail with Larry Malmberg in the Nationals. My reaction was that,
at my age it seemed like too much boat for me to single-hand (or even
double-hand), and the access to go forward on deck was a bit awkward getting
past the corner of the cabin and the shrouds.

I sailed pretty actively from about 1975 until 1990, and I owned a Cal-20, a
Santana 25' Quarter ton, and an Ericson 28+. I still have a J24, which is
stored on its trailer, with flat tires, in Carson, CA, and I've never
actually sailed it. It needs to go, soon. I've thought I might try to find
a J28 some day, but right now I'm more into cars.

The C38 correspondence is a wonderful source of information, much of it
generally applicable to any sail boat.

The idea of being in the San Francisco Bay Area for the Americas Cup events
sounds like something I may be interested in, and (depending on other
commitments) you could count me as a possible volunteer. (My daughter lives
in San Jose, and spending more time with her family is also an attraction,
as far as the Bay Area is concerned.)

Please let me know if there is anything else you need.

Craig and Everyone,
PayPal is working! It was down for only a day as Anders worked to further
develop the site.
He is currently working on a page which will allow folks who are not
currently members to use PayPal (coming soon Craig!).
Thanks everyone for your patience and feedback!
