[C38] Cutlass Bearing Replacement

I was able to slide my shaft out by removing the cutlass bearing and then turning the rudder slightly- the key being having the extra clearance in the strut housing with the bearing removed.

Angelika and Steve,
We do have the instructions for Cutlass Bearing replacement on the website...

Regarding removal of the prop shaft. It can either go out the stern, which requires that you drop the rudder (you don't have to take it all the way out, just down enough so you can work the drive shaft past the rudder tube). OR... maybe... it can come forward???? I have heard of folks loosening the rear motor mounts and slipping the shaft under the motor. Have not done this myself, but digging a hole where my boat sits (on concrete) would frowned on by the boatyard!

I think a far better solution would be to not remove the shaft at all. My drive shaft is is 1" stainless, which would make it relatively simple to fabricate a bearing press. This is what my boatyard made with two 3"x6" pieces of 1/2 inch plate. One plate has a U cut into it to slip over the shaft behind the strut. The other has a (for us) 1 1/16" hole that slides up the shaft. both plates have holes on either side that accommodate two, 1/2" threaded rods. They push out old bearing with a steel sleeve and slide it off the shaft. They then reverse the press and press the new bearing in. I recall they quickly heat the strut and cool the cutlass bearing.
I think we could use our new bearing instead of a sleeve, which would push the old bearing out and up the shaft. You could then use a "mototool" to cut the bearing off the shaft.
By the way, if the strut has "any" give... or wiggle.... it is a much bigger project!

Hey all,

Our newest member from down under Angelika posted a question about how to remove the cutlass bearing without dropping the rudder. She didnt see any responses back, but I do remember reading some comments. I couldnt find the thread in the archives or in my emails. If you dont mind please comment again on your experiences, if I remember correctly I believe Steve O built a tool for helping remove the bearing. Thanks.
