Hello Steve,
My guess is to lightly sand the surface to smooth it and remove oxidized gelcoat. After that I would wipe the surface with acetone to clean and prep the sanded surface for the adhesive strip.
I didn't say that was the right way, I said it was my guess. I have used this method with pretty good results on similar projects.

Hi Folks, the list has been quite for a bit so I thought I'd throw out a question. Based upon [your] input I have purchased and received the "frictionless" tape to use under the companionway hatch slides...my question now is, what's the best way to clean/prepare the surface so that the tape sticks...heck, at $30 for 15 feet I don't want to do it twice! :-)
