[C38] Propane locker

I made a sealed locker that I placed in my sail locker to hold a standard #20 propane tank. I ran the vent tube to the port forward winch pocket where it was out of sight.

I discontinued using this propane locker because it took up so much room in my sail locker. Even just a #20 tank takes up a lot of room even without the CG type sealed tank locker.

Many boaters are now using corrosion resistant aluminum or Fiberglas tanks mounted on the stern pulpit. This gives easy access, no venting required like an onboard tank, and they take up no locker room that could be used for other purposes.

The pulpit mounted propane also gives your boat that live aboard world cruiser look too. Yea, I didn't care for that description either. The good news is you could leave the propane tank and bracket at home when you didn't need them and just have the propane line quick connect with waterproof cap left on deck for easy assembly when you want to sacrifice some burnt carnage.

Phil, That would certainly work, but it would have to be removable as you need access to the steering quadrant. I presently stow 8 life jackets in that locker and would have to find a different location for the jackets.
Also you are locating another 50-80 lbs at the extreme ends of the boat. A comfortable seat location is a tough one on our boats. Why do you have so much propane capacity? Are you planning an ocean voyage? As I remember I used two 1lb canisters for a crew of 6 for the Friday thru Sunday Newport to Ensenada races. I would think 2.5 gallons would last about three weeks.

Steve O,

I have been thinking of using the locker behind the steering pedestal for propane storage. I am currently hanging a 2.5 gal tank off the aft railing in a large fender holder. It works pretty well but I’d like more tankage now that I installed a Dickinson propane fireplace.

My thought was that the seat behind the wheel is too low for me to sit on while I steer. If I raised the seat about 8-10”, I could fabricate a sealed locker that would fit into/onto that space and house (2) 2.5 gal tanks and be high enough above the water level to drain.

What do you think of this idea?

Has anyone considered taking a portion of the locker fwd of the vee berth and making it into a sealed propane locker? An access hatch would would have to be cut through the foredeck and the locker would be drained into the anchor compartment, which is drained overboard through the stem above the waterline. To me, that fwd locker is rather useless except to throw the dirty clothes into. I am presently in the process of building a FG airtight sealed locker for a 2.5 gal tank that would fit in the sail locker, which location I really don't like, because it is located below WL (won't meet CC building regs) and it takes up valuable space in the sail locker. Even though I have spent many hours building the plug and I'm at the point of doing the FG layup, I think I will put the project on hold and investigate the fwd locker location.
Comments would be appreciated.
