As a follow up to Dan's post our boat was out "drying" for about two weeks and it didnt dry (granted seattle in April is not a very good location for drying a boat) Surveyor noted water under the barrier coat in his survey.

Hi Marci, I'm on the Chesapeake Bay and had a Pearson 30 for 23 years and when I hauled it out about every 3 or 4 years it would be out all winter. My method was to use a raspe type drill bit (it was about 3/4 inch round) and I would open up the blisters with that bit using a circular motion. I didn't go deep, just through the gelcoat. As you get through the gelcoat the matting was gray in color. You could see the dampness because the matting would be a darker gray. As I used the circular motion I would enlarge the area until it was all a lighter gray and I knew the dampness was gone. They looked like little craters. In the end some craters were small (about 1/4 inch and some were as large as a nickle. I did this as soon as the boat was hauled in the fall and left them dry out all winter and filled them as Tom did with Marine Tex. If you use a plastic putty knife and cover them a little high, when you sand them they should match the hull and come out smooth. If you put too little in, when you sand them you may have a low spot and have to add more filler to do a good job. I never did put a barrier coat on. The blisters I filled never came back but every once in a while new ones would show up and I would repair them the same way every couple of years.

If you have just pulled the boat and it is only going to be out a few weeks I don't think they would have time to dry out.

I hope this helps.

I just discovered a few blisters on our hull. Would anyone like to share their experiences with this dreaded subject matter?
