[C38] Lockers and Batteries

Hi Guys,

Legacy has the watermaker installed in the bow over the water tank. It uses
the thru-hull that's near the depth transducer. There's been a problem with
this arrangement and I'm considering changing it when I put in a new
watermaker. Under sail, in moderate or rough conditions, waves force air
under the bow and with the watermaker running, its sucked into the intake.
With my PUR40, this air stops all fresh water production. I get no
indication until hours later when I find that there's no additional water in
the tank (lots of amp hours down the drain). I don't know if other
watermakers are more tolerant of air.

We had to put a per-pump in with a loop similar to an anti-siphon loop but
with a small hole at the top to vent the air (and leak a little water).
This was not a good arrangement. If the hole was small enough that it
didn't leak much water, it would plug up easily with drying salt. Also, the
pre-pump used additional power.

I'm considering moving the watermaker to the cabinet under the galley sink
but we sleep on the permanently lowered dinette and I don't really want the
watermaker noise that close to the off watch person who's trying to sleep.
I may just run the inlet line to a thru-hull further aft. I guess I'll
wait to see what the watermaker people recommend when I buy a new one.
