Steve,
     We have an oil seep off Coal Oil point in Santa Barbara. Where the 
oil goes from here I do not know but you might have found it going 
by.This oil also shows up on the beach. In the 1920's, my private road 
was created by dragging a log up the hill behind mules. They  paved it 
by combining crude oil (tar) from he beach with sand to form asphalt. 
When we first got here 16 years ago and were laying out our landscaping, 
we dug up pieces of the original road. You can tell by the holes where 
the salt in the sand melted away. Joe
