[C38] Chain Plates

Well, that gives me food for thought. I think I'll re-bed the chain plates for now to prevent moisture intrusion. I have not had any problem from them in the past, its just time; time to replace those 30 year old stainless chain plates. Although I truly believe our boats are well built, I've had trouble in the past with other boats and I'm a believer in preventive maintenance. Looks like I have a new two year plan. I bet they are about $200-250 each. Thanks for the insight Max and Phil, I appreciate it.

I agree with Max. The bolt was probably just to hold the quite complicated assembly together when they welded the parts. The strength is in the weld. BTW I had to remove the face of the cabinet and most of the interior of the cabinet to get the chainplate out of the boat.

Subject: [C38] Chain Plates
I was looking at my chain plates the other day and noted something I had not put together before. Each of the four chain plates for the lower shrouds appears to have a bolt going through it coming up from the under side of the deck. The bolt also appears to hold the tab which secures the lower shrouds to the chain plate. It doesn't seem that a single bolt would hold the tab to the chain plate, so I ask those of you who have taken this area apart before and re-bedded it, is the tab just bolted on or is it welded to the chain plate in addition to being bolted on. Thanks for your help.
