Max,
Number One was the prototype boat. It was owned by the factory and
sailed by Gary Swenson of Ullman Sails. Gary's dad had an Islander 24
named So Long which Gary learned to sail on. I had an identical boat
built by Columbia called the Columbia Contender. At the time of hull
number one C-38 I had a Catalina 30 with a gas Atomic 4 and a tiller. I
had a mooring at Cat Harbor, Catalina Island. Gary sailed in single
handed bringing the boat back from the Ensenada race. A that time, the
boat had no interior. Gary slept in a sleeping bag on the hull. He came
over to our boat for dinner in Cat Harbor. While Gary had it, the boat
was kept in Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard. Joe Launie, Macavity PS I
guess I am the ad hoc fleet historian. Someone else is going to have to
gather up these bits and pieces as they occur to me.
