Jonathan,

I did what your are thinking about with the exception that I do not lead halyards through the mast collar, we have mast mounted winches (going to the deck this year but will install mast base halyard blocks on the deck). I use the collar for attaching unused halyards to keep them in one location for the foredeck crew, we do have the cunningham and topping lift led from the collar but these have lesser loads than the halyards.

What I did was to first make a cardboard template to get the configuration and holes in the proper location, then made another cardboard template after tweaking the dimensions. We made the collar from stainless steel plate and welded stainless steel u bolts which we cut the threads off of. I used alot of tefgel betweent the aluminum mast collar and stainless collar to fit corrosion I plan on removing it this year and putting a mylar sheet between the two. attached photos show the collars fore and aft as well as installed, I have not had any problems with the design or use, let me know if the photos do not upload I have had some problems in the past that are supposed to be fixed.

Subject: [C38] Mast deck collar

I would like to install a mast deck collar, SS, with eyes welded onto it that I can then attach turning blocks so I can run my halyards, reefing lines and sail controls back to the cockpit. I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this. Where can I find one made for the Catalina 38? What about the stress on the deck from the blocks pulling up? Is there a need for a strut down below to transfer the load back onto the mast? Any photos you may have showing your deck collar would be helpful as well.

Thanks
