[C38] Hatch retrofit

Joe, Peter Lagan did the same retrofit and found as I did that the cast aluminum hatches bubble when welded, so if some bubbles in your surface are not a problem for you then the welding is a quick and simple improvement.

Steve,
Thanks - the support is a good idea - this is at least the second time I have had to replace a cracked lens. I have hull number 365. Joe

Joe, here are the pics I talked about earlier on the hatches, you can see the cross bar welded across the top to add extra support for the glass and I also added a skirt around the O.D. to keep sheets from fouling on the hatch tops when taking or gybing.

Joe, I don't know if your are bomar or lewmar, but both have replacement lenses. I bought a huge bomar lense for a friend a couple of years ago. It was twice the size of our biggest hatch, the price was $70 and also bought the original sealant/adhesive ..

Best of luck with the hip surgery!

	Steve,
Thanks for the info. The plastic cracked on my hatch. I think I replaced the plastic before and got the wrong stuff. Joe

I did replace the acrylic in all my hatches, the large one in the salon and I have two smaller ones forward of the mast one in the head and one by the locker. For the two smaller I removed the hatches and plexi glass and installed a support across for the acrylic to rest on, (I cant send attachments to the list serve for some reason but maybe Peter Lagan could forward the photos I sent to him) Same problem with crew walking on them and the flexing caused the seal to break, almost lost one of the acrylic lenses during a weekend race. The yard actually installed it the first time and to say the least I was pissed when a few months later I could pull it off with my fingertips.

The secret is to use Sika Primer -209 D to etch the acrylic in the area that you will apply the sealant ( I used black 4200). The primer is not cheap at $50 dollars for a little bottle that is more than you will ever use in your lifetime. If you dont use the primer you WILL NOT get a good bond. It may last for a few months but it will fail. Cut the old sealant out around the acrylic and push the lense out, clean up the area of all old sealant and acetone wash, I found 3M adhesive remover works really well to get the old stuff up, Mask off the area you want to etch, remove the tape then turn the lense over, mask the lense to all the way around on the top side, mask the edges of the hatch and then put a bead of 4200 on the hatch, set the lense in place and then fill the voids all the way around the lense flush to the top of the lense, clean up and remove the tape from the hatch and lense and youre finished. I havent had a problem since I did it
	 last year and going down

the coast and back up they were under water an awful lot of the time.

	patrick,
I am also looking for cheap parts My model (#165) has a plexiglass hatch in the main solon halfway between the main hatch and the mast. It is cracked. I told my mechanic to replace it. He just asked for $575 to get a new one "which is close but not quite the same". I told him to get stuffed, stop the project and put a piece of gaffer's tape over the crack. (My crew walk on the hatch with their fat feet.)

I plan on replacing the plexiglass when I get back on my feet. (my artificial hip failed which has left me non-mobile for the last couple of months.Surgery to replace the bad artificial hip is scheduled for 11/21.
Question - has anyone replaced the plexiglass in their hatches and if so, how did you do it? Joe

$800????? WTF!! I'll rather use it with a tiller for a while, until a I find a used one on ebay... These wheels are quite common among several Catalina models, with the same rudder post bore, and every now and then, they appear on ebay..
