Mark, you won't be turning heads with the Jeanneau as with the 38!!!!!. If
it was a newer jeanneau, that's another story..

You have the cheapest c38, but I have the most neglected ever. .... And it
wasn't that expensive to put her back on shape, just time....

It depends on your time to spend on Pokai and your skills..... And of
course, personal choice!

There really is no choice. The Jeanneu is a wine a cheese boat. You will
find yourself humiliated to be seen in it. The C38 is a salty dog. Go with
the C38.

OK, the rookie is also a rabble-rouser (sp?). I suspect I purchased the
lowest priced Catalina 38 ever. Less than $15k. 1978, tiller, nothing
worked on the boat when I bought it. Water leaks fouled electrical panel
and half of the toggels were rusted. Battery charger installed in hanging
locker, shore power connection didn't work, so an extension cord was run
through the head hatch to keep batteries topped off. Engine (Westerbeke 33)
needed $1800 worth of work to get waterpump and impellor going for sea trial
(seller wanted me to pay half; I passed as I made my offer assuming the
engine ran). Project boat.u get the pic?

Longer story shorter; I am proud owner of hull #6. Here is my $10,000
question: My punch list of improvements (half for wheel steering and
dodger) is $10k. I budgeted $3k for Edson parts for wheel, but may buy used
for $500. $10k could be $7.5k. Sailed my boat to Catalina Island (25 miles
off shore) twice, and I love it! U may have seen my earlier punch list.
Half of my 24 repairs could be made for $600 total, but lots of self-labor
love.

My selling broker (Long Beach Yacht Sales) has a 1984 Jeanneau 37 (mine is
hull #6, 1978) that is a bank repo reduced to $26K. Has wheel, dodger,
windlass, Perkins deisel, etc. Have reason to believe I could buy for less
(has accepted offer for less). Still needs lots of brightwork, but more
labor than material. Bottom line: if I sold my 38 for what I paid (it now
runs and most things work), and added $10k, I could likely buy newer boat
without labor and aggrevation to improve Cat38. If not this boat, other
FSBO's could be available. Advice? Heresy? Would promise to be like Tom T.
alumni with mounting experience!

I believe someone recently posted a note that they knew where to find one.
