"watch them push limits of sailing technology" Spot on!

The AC 45's are a thrill to watch..but watching 72 foot winged monsters fly around the Bay will be awesome and off the charts!
I've been following the Cup since I was a kid. Flew to Freemantle to watch Dennis win the Cup back in '87 and went to both San Diego Cups. (We've already seen one winged cup).
As much as I loved the 12 Metre and AC class yachts, I am more excited that our sport will be getting a lot of sweet press!

Cheers!

I started sailing dinghies when I was about 12 and graduated to 'beach' cats in my 20's and still had a double-trapeeze- ragged-edge-of-disaster 18' Sol Cat when I bought into my first 30' monohull sloop. Every boat I've ever sailed was exciting and a thrill to sail. I've learned from every boat I've sailed. I even allowed one of my cats to be used as a test platform for hydrofoils in the 70's. My Catalina 38 teaches me new things about the sport every time I go out. To dismiss a boat because it is radically different is to miss out on another thrill and a chance to learn. I will be as close to the action on SF Bay as I can get if only to be part of the spectacle !! But for sure to watch them push limits of sailing technology. Heck, if we aren't going out .. I'll walk out to the point here to watch whatever races the local yacht club is sponsoring. Beach chair, cooler and binocs and I'm a happy sailor.

  Steve,
I do not deny the cats are interesting - it is just that they are in a different game. If you want to see boats go fast, check out the unlimited hydroplanes. They do 200 miles an hour on a closed oval course. Along time ago when I was an insurance underwriter for Fireman's Fund I underwrote all Bill Harrah's stuff - casinos, auto collection and his newest toy - Miss Tahoe an unlimited. That is exciting boat racing. Joe

Joe, you should watch the cats, I agree with you and prefer our sloops, however I do have to admit that while we were in San Francisco prior to the start of the Coastal Cup, they were in the bay practicing, It is a sight to see them accelerate, turn and just scream across the water.

    Dan,
That racing was done in 12 meters which were just a larger, faster version of the boats w were sailing. I do not relate to these new huge catamarans which are so different from sailing as I know it. I would not go to see the present America's Cup if it were held in my yacht club. Joe

    ESPN Classic
    Presents
    1987 America's Cup Retrospective

    This Saturday, February 4, 2010
Six months after losing the America’s Cup in 1983, Hall of Famer Dennis Conner mounted a comeback. But, first he had to defeat 12 other teams to earn the right to be the challenger.
After a grueling elimination series Conner prevailed, and faced the Australians in the 1987 America's Cup. Conner won in four straight, and became a national hero. ESPN covered the races live.
An ESPN Classic program, scheduled for airing this weekend on February 4th, revisits this amazing comeback tale. Dennis Conner relives the experience on the 25th year Anniversary of his victory with Stars & Stripes, including scenes from the October 23rd NSHOF Induction at the San Diego Yacht Club.

The program is sponsored by North Sails and Rolex. It is hosted by Gary Jobson and Jim Kelly.
