[C38] Transmission

Jay: Just be sure the gear lever is fully in gear both ways. These ZF 10's
are noted for failure if not fully engaged. I have a ZF 10 on my 5424
Universal

Hi Larry, You are quite welcome. Hopefully parts of it will be useful.

As to your first question, I installed a brand new ZF10 (Hurth HBW100) last
Friday and it definitely clunks when going into gear. Dorothy and I
adjusted the linkage perfectly and the shaft alignment is perfect as well.
Everything went together nicely. New damper, new ATF, no leaks. It shifts
well and is quite when running, it just clunks hard when shifting.

Also, I had rented various Catalinas from 27-36 ft from the local rental
fleet before buying Broad Reach and they all clunked as well. Even when
idling for a few seconds between forward and reverse.

I think it's simply the nature of straight cut gears and no real clutch
mechanism.

I thought I had read somewhere that idle speed should be 1100-1300 for our
engine but that seems too high. Maybe that was for tractors with clutches??

A very special Thank You to Jay Sorensen for coming through with a used
transmission. Picked it up Sunday and am taking it to the shop today. A
quick question though regarding transmissions. Does every one with a Hurth
transmission get that "clunk" when you put it into gear? Also, the
transmission guy tells me that there is a "sweet spot" for engine rpm when
idling, this so called sweet spot causes less wear on the damper and gears,
what's your experience with this? My idle is set at about 900 rpm which
apparently is a bit too low? I'm told the damper was worn from "engine
chatter" as well as a few of the gears, the engine chatter is apparently
from the idle being set too low.

Best regards,

Larry Malmberg
