Dan,
On Macavity we went with a harken split drum furler when we
commissioned the boat. These days when we are in racing mode (all the
time now) we remove the feeder from the head stay, let the furling unit
drop down to the top of the drum and replace the feeder. We do not
bother with the drum - just leave it there. The harken grooves are the
same as they use for non-furling sails. We do not bring any of our
halyards back to the cockpit because it gets too crowded back there. We
have two Lewmar # 40s (today would use harken) on the deck near the
mast. On the port side we have the genoa halyards and used to have the
butt lift up and down. On the starboard side we have the 2 spinnaker
halyards, topping lift and main halyard. In a chute set or drop, the
genoa and spin halyard folks are out of each others way. We use harken
blocks for fairleads at the base of the mast leading to Spinlock
clutches. I will send photos. We bring the mainsheet to the cabin top
to an electric harken 44. Primary winches electric harken 53s. We do
not fly anything but assymetric chutes. We have a Seldon adjustable
sprit going 42 inches past the headstay. We cleared the electric winches
and the sprit with PHRF. We have everything but crew. Anyone want to
retire to Santa Barbara? Joe Launie/Macavity
