[C38] vibration under power

Yes, it seems to be a chicken and egg issue with us. There was more
vibration with the new transmission and as it worsened we found that (as
you correctly diagnosed) the starboard rear mount was loose. Tightened
it once and it still vibrates more than before the new tranny went in.
Decoupled the flange and there is a slight gap at the bottom of the
flange. Because alignment would be a 2 dimensional issue (up/down and
fore/aft with the shaft) I was looking at a two step approach. First,
align the motor as precisely as possible, and then add a flexible
coupling (if they work) to finish off the job. I was going to wing it
as far as alignment was concerned, but step by step instructions would
make it go quicker I suspect.

Also, the nuts on the flexible motor mounts do not have lock washers on
our boat. Is that everyone else's experience as well? If so, does
anyone know the rational for no lock washers for that specific
application? Seems strange. Thanks!..............Jay

Check your motor mounts, when I get vibration it is usually from one of
the mounts being loose, also prop may make a difference, when I motor
with the two bladed Folding prop there is more vibration then when I
have the three bladed feathering Max Prop.

Hi Don, Thanks for the quick response. A practical guide for engine
alignment would be very useful. A cursory look on-line did not yield
anything. Vibration became more of an issue after installing a new
ZF-10. After a few hours break in, with more vibration than previously,
I have the coupling apart now and can visualize the misalignment. Just
not sure if I should start with the front mount, loosen everything first
or what! And those side mounts have very little clearance for a wrench.
Was skeptical about the chances of having vibration free running gear
without a flexible coupler but you give me hope! Thanks!..........Jay

Jay: We have a solid shaft coupling on Discrete Charm and no vibration.
I would suspect that your engine and shaft are not aligned.
I was able to align my shaft in a couple of hours alone. With help, it
would go faster. Instructions are on line.
I will send you instructions for alignment if you want.

Greetings All,

As we use our C-38 more and more we are finding that we'd like to reduce
the drivetrain vibration during motoring as much as possible. When
going to Catalina from San Diego it's a 10-12 hr motor and the vibration
can become annoying to Admiral Dorothy! Does anyone have experience
with the R&D flexible coupler, Bullflex, or any other brand? Is there
a brand to definitely stay away from? Did you have to shorten the shaft
or did you accept the extra distance between the prop and the strut?
Thanks!.......Jay
