Hi Don,

It sounds like your mainsheet may be rigged wrong.?

You should already have the "primitive" C38 mainsheet arrangement with 4:1 purchase.? There should be two blocks on the boom with the mainsheet extending over to both sides of the companionway (with a block on one side and an eyestrap on the other).? The line should run up and down for a total of four times, giving you the 4:1 purchase, with a block on the traveler. ? The bitter end of the mainsheet should, in fact, terminate at the winch on the starboard side.? (Forgive me if this isn't precisely right.? My boat is 1,500 miles away so I can't go look at it for some time.)?

I don't particularly like the way the main sheet is rigged.? I find that it often binds up, especially when I'm sailing deeper than a beam reach.? (I've practically emptied cans of McLube over the years, trying to make the binding go away.)? There are lots of ways to make it simpler but these are likely a violation of our class rules.? Using fiddle blocks or double (side-by-side) blocks would probably clean things up, but then the mainsheet couldn't run on the sides of the companionway because of the angles.? Actually I would most like to have a two-speed mainsheet.? Harken makes a great one.

Here's the link to our association's "About the C38" (specs) page.? There are several sets of pictures of the deck rigging, though they're not terribly clear:

http://www.catalina38.org/?page_id=75/

I hope I haven't steered you wrong.? I'll be eager to hear what others think of the C38 mainsheet setup, especially whether they have had the binding problem or made modifications.? And of course I'd also like to know if the modifications are violations of class rules.

Thanks!

Warm regards,

Bruce

Bruce: I have a standard main sheet rig that goes from the boom and
traveler to a winch on the top of the house, on my C38. Watching your
Harken video I saw a couple of purchases that had more mechanical
advantage. It would be cool to haul the main sheet by hand rather than
by the winch. Could I go to 4x or something with a 4x block on the
traveler and another couple of blocks on the boom? Advice appreciated.
Thanks, Don

Hi Phil,

I like Sta-Set X for its tensile strength and less creep/stretch than the regular Sta-Set, but it's not my favorite when compared to some of the more high-tech options.? New England Ropes offers great alternatives to traditional polyester rope for halyards and other applications.? If you haven't seen their catalog it's really informative.? You can find it on our Kansas City Sailing website by clicking on this link.? Take a look at the last two sections of the catalog entitled: "Line Stretch in the Real World" and "Line Selection Guide."? They're very interesting.

If you don't want to break the bank by paying $7+ per foot on something like V-100, I would seriously consider New England Ropes "Endura Braid."? Its core is Dyneema and its cover is polyester.? It lists for around $2.89 per foot for (11 mm diameter) - obviously much less than $7 per foot. Details about Endura Braid and all of the New England Ropes products are in their catalog.

Here's a fun video about rope, worth watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyDHBNix6hA.

Warm regards,

Bruce

I've used 7/16" staset X for halyards for 12 years. ?I am thinking about going lighter stronger. ?Any suggestions.?

I've always offered members of the Catalina 38 fleet deep discounts on parts, foul weather gear, rigging, deck hardware, safety equipment, and additional sailing supplies.? When possible I've been able to beat most others' prices.? I make it a point not to pester the group with selfish marketing efforts, but especially when it comes to rigging and deck hardware, we can usually beat other retailers and we ship for free.I'm only offering this information because you asked for a place to purchase halyards.
