[C38] engine problem

Another potential problem is sucking sea water into your fuel tank through
the vent. Two Trans Pac's and we finally figured it out, when we are going
downwind with the chute up and a following sea the fuel vent was sucking
water up and into the fuel tank. I finally pulled the vent hose off and
tucked it away in the stern locker and no more water in the fuel.

I'm a little late in a very simple "check". We had a engine problem that
haunted us for years- usually in the wee hours of the morning coming back
from the Newport to Ensenada race. The engine would suddenly just stop and
we go through all the dirty stuff for changing filters, etc. We even pulled
the tank and had it chemically cleaned. Finally at wits end I pulled the
tank pick-up tube and found a small, fine ss screen on the end of the rubber
tube. I threw that turkey overb'd and haven't had that problem since- that
was over four years ago. The lesson: let your fuel pump, suction line be
"free" to pickup debris off the bottom of your tank and let your suction
filter collect the debris.

Hope this helps, Steve O
