[C38] Old boat blues - spreaders

Hi Max,

I never did find out who made the mast. I took the spreaders to a boatyard
that has a metal shop. They cut off the outboard ends and welded new ones
on, so I'm back in business. I tensioned the rig in a manner very similar
to what Steve described and then went sailing. With the boat heeled at
15-20 degrees, the intermediates went a bit slack, so I tightened them a
few turns, but everything looks pretty good. The mast stayed in column
side-to-side, and had some fore and aft bend, with a fair curve. Next step
is to figure out how the pressure gage reading on the hydraulic backstay
adjuster correlates to the load on the backstay, so I can tell if I'm
overloading the headstay.

Regards,

Ray
