Yes that’s the one I have. Is it one of the older ones that has a sender
unit indicating the rudder angle?

That's great! I'll appreciate that. I have a ray marine autopilot that I
got very cheap from a sailboat manufacturer that went bankruptcy here in
Costa Rica, but haven't found a right way to install it, due to the lack of
space around the rudder post..
So, the more ideas I get, the easier it will be to install!!

OK, next time I’m at the boat I will take a picture; I thought the access
was standard. Mine is a 1982 boat.

Julian:
Include a photo of the quarter birth cutout access, if you can. I am
contemplating this modification.
Thanks, Don

Well I installed my new autopilot (replacing 6000 too) through the opening
in the rear bunk. It was not easy and involved much bad language.

*Subject:* [C38] Accessing the Auto Pilot
My Autohelm 6000 on my ’81 Cat-38 is either dead or dying. I’ll have to
replace some or all of it, depending on what still works. What I can’t
figure out is how one can access the area that is directly behind the
engine. There is that opening in the lazarette, but I’m not sure a human
could actually get through that space. From the rear bunk, there’s just a
rectangular opening that’s big enough for an arm attached to a flashlight,
but that’s about it. How do all you owners tinker with the steering gear
below the pedestal? Thanks very much in advance!
