A few years back I had an issue with getting the revs up on the 3 blade
classic maxprop, which was associated with black smoke when I pushed it.
After several tries I ended up going down on the pitch, to believe it or
not, 14 degrees according to the Maxprop manual calculations. When the
exhaust riser finally fell apart I had the thought that the exhaust was
compromising the output of the motor. With a new riser, the motor runs
cleaner, but the boat is slow. Since I have the boat out of the water, I
was going to reset the prop. Does anyone have a Maxprop and what
settings are you using? i have the original Universal 5424 and a 2:1
ratio in the transmission.

I installed my Racor before the Facet fuel pump.
This way the fuel pump will get cleaner diesel.

It was installed the other way around, and it made no sense to me. Now I
has it installed as per the Catalina 38 diagram, and have worked great
for the last four years.

Steve's set up, and indeed that of many of us, have a big
beautiful Racor or two upstream from the fuel pump.
If so, it is not likely that crud in the fuel is causing the
fuel pump failure. As a point of information, 12 years of perfect
reliability have come with the fuel pump on Discreet Charm (Yanmar 3GM).

do have a screw off filter in the bottom. You can replace it or clean
it. Original is stainless I think, replacements are paper like'

The one I replaced was the universal it lasted
probably four years, before that were two cheap off brands that the yard
put in. Didn't know about the screen, do you twist the bottom of the
pump off for access?

Those fuel pumps are supposed to be very

Here is a quick project I just finished
before we head off cruising. I have replaced 3 fuel pumps in the six
years I've owned Peregrine (I have no idea why so many) this last time
we just finished a 12 hour delivery from Victoria and the next day when
I started the engine at the dock, the pump failed within 1 minute. Not
wanting it to happen while cruising or at an inopportune time the
following project. I installed a second fuel pump, two valves and a
switch for current. Now with the turning of those two valves and a
toggle of the switch the second fuel pump takes over. I'm having a
plaque made up that shows the valve and switch positions and plan to
mount it just above the fuel filters. Pretty sweet.
