I always knew there was something about SD I didn’t care for.  LOL  Sounds like rat traps baited with peanut butter is in order, as to the smell, you might try a total bath with pure air, it’s an air freshener and I think West Marine has it, if not on line.

Rats (yes, literally rats) have ravaged my beautiful Crusader!   What can I do?  How do I get rid of the presence and smell of rat urine and fecal matter?  I haven't yet checked wiring, etc.  And then, how do I keep them out?
