We have been in the process of a full restoration of #110 Dulcinea since purchasing her in September 2013. All systems have been replaced. When we tacked the engine, we decided to go with a full rebuild of the original 5424 instead replacing with a new one. Bill's Marine (Bill Ingle) did a fantastic job here in the SF bay for a fraction of the cost of a new engine and install. We replaced all the fittings, filters, wiring, gushed and also pulled the old metal gas can, glassed in a new cradle and put in a smaller 24 gal Moeller poly tank. She's good as new (in fact <20 hours) and will last us another 30 years.

Hi Patrick,
I just installed a 40hp Yanmar 3JH4E.
Same height and and width, but 2" shorter and 40 pounds lighter than the old universal 5424.
The muffler and exhaust hose also had to be replaced for a 3" diameter and I also moved the engine 2" forward..
At the end, the waterline on the stern raised 3/4"..
The engine bed had to be raised a little bit on the front, but that will have to be made for any new engine, because of the weird three mount configuration of the original Universal 5424..

This was the only choice that I had here in Costa Rica, but a 35hp Betamarine, or Universal seems like a good choice... Both use the same Kubota block, and are way lighter and smaller than our current engines.. That will add for more space on the sides for maintenance....

If you need some pics, just ask..

Hope this helps!

My Universal engine overheated. Marine mechanic doesn't know if it is the head gasket, the head or the block.
Expensive in labor to replace head gasket. If it ends up being the head they can try and fix it but I still have a 30 year old engine.
I am thinking of replacing engine.
Any thoughts?
