[C38] installing a bilge pump

Don,

Thanks for the reply. When you say the hoses from the 2 larger pumps go to the exit ports in the stern, do you mean they go the existing ports for raw water discharge and/or the manual bilge pump, or did you make new exit ports? There are also 2 more exit ports in the stern, 1 for each scupper, but I think these are too close to the waterline for bilge pump exits. If the Rule pump hoses share exit ports with the raw water discharge and/or the manual bulge pump, what type of thru-hull fitting is used?

Bruce

Bruce: We have three bilge pumps.
The Rule 1500 gph and the Rule 3800 gph go via properly sized hoses directly to the exit ports in the stern; these have float switches
Would not "tee" because this would impede the flow.
The third pump is the smallest Rule, which we use to get the smallest residuum out of the bilge. Its hose is directed to the sink through hull.
Discreet Charm is a 1980 model. Last year the stern tube of the hull cracked and caused the hose of the packing gland for the propeller shaft to come loose. Only the pair of big rules saved the boat.
Big repair job.

We want to install an automatic submersible bilge pump on our '83/'84 C38 "Out of Film" to supplement the manual pump. We've gone 25 years without an automatic pump but figure our luck is bound to run out sometime. Has anyone done this? We were hoping to avoid making another hole in the hull by teeing the outlet hose into the larger outlet hose of the manual pump but realize this may not be practical.

Steve, what is the proper address to put something on the Catalina 38 list? Seems like I may have the wrong address to send messages to.
