oil looks clear.
water is clear
I flushed cooling system and rusty water came out.
so water can't leak out of a defective heat changer? Right?

No. Water loss would mean a gasket or hose leak, or a cracked block or head (not likely). Are the oil and water pure (ie not mixing with each other)? They are tough engines, look for leaks.

Thanks for your reply.
If the heat exchanger is dirty will that cause water loss?

Another suggestion is to remove the exchange r and clean it. The tubes collect calcification and a wire pipe cleaner can clean it.

I used my 5424 without a thermostat and a 3" heat exchanger for 12 years and had no problems..

Patrick, check on eBay for the heat exchanger... You might find a bargain!

Patrick, I read somewhere that the cooling system doesn't work with out the thermostat installed. I was going to leave it out to make the engine run cooler, but had to put a new one in.

Hello,
My Catalina has been overheating. Universal Diesel 5424.
I removed the thermostat........it was corroded and wrapped with debris.
I removed and cleaned the internal water pump. Also lot of debris.
Put hose in engine. Water didn't flow but eventually it did. More debris.
now when I run the engine it is cool until I put on the radiator cap..........then it gets too hot and loses water.
Any thoughts?
Patrick
