Thank you, Joe, for that explanation . . . . kind of you!   I was half kidding in my response but I was also interested so, I looked it up and learned something new.   There is much to brush up on!  I love my boat which is in phenomenal physical shape with tons of extras so, I know I will be busy reading this winter!

I was never a racer though wanted to try it in my early 30's . . .   got into cruising while raising my family then, sold the boat for family reasons and continued to sail by bare boat chartering frequently.   I switched to aviation for 15 years and now back into sailing - always my first love!
It was nice to hear from you.

How common is the term "assy"?  I've always heard an asymmetrical spinnaker called an "asym".  Assy sounds a little short and vulgar.  ;-)

Bill,  Joe M. is an old salt with more C38 racing time than almost anyone sailing!  He has his boat tricked out like some of us only dream of and the chute/sprit really makes her move in the southern California area.

  Hi Joe,
Okay!  I've been out of this for a while and no doubt have forgotten a few things but, what's an "assy chute" - oh, and maybe a "sprit"?  Is this a real item to make me go faster or some kind of initiation for new members . . . .  lol!

You bought a great boat. In my opinion the best single improvement you could make is to rig for an assy chute. A detachable sprit is best but it is good even without it. Virtually all new racing boats are sprit boats. Joe/Macavity On 8/27/2015 6:28 PM, Charles Finn wrote:
 Welcome Aboard!
Do go to the website and look at all the specs, projects, etc.  Do look at the listserve archives!
And of course, ASK all those questions that will help you enjoy your C38!

Hello to Everyone,        My name is Bill.   I am joining your association to take advantage of a wealth of experience, I'm sure, with the Catalina 38.   I just purchased my 38 named "Moxie" with "flag blue" hull from her previous owner in Northport, NY.  I will keep the name but I am changing the hailing port to a CT location.   I will be keeping her at Old Lyme Marina for the remainder of this season.  She is sound and a real beauty in my opinion and that of the surveyor!    lol        I am not a novice having once owned a 30' tall rig but I have been away for periods of a few years in between chartering larger bare boats usually in the LI Sound area for the past 30 years.  I look forward to chatting with any and all about your boats and your experiences.   This boat has a lot of amenities of which some will take a little studying to finesse, I'm sure!        So, if anyone has anything to contribute or suggest, advice is well received here and,  .  .  .  I look forward to your comments!        Best regards, Bill
